COOKE & SON Ltd========================================== A World War One nickel plated brass ‘Officer of the Watch’ naval telescope by B. Cooke & Son Ltd. This pancreatic telescope is in very good condition with the original leather sleeve to the barrel, and attached leather eyepiece cover. It has an 18” barrel and two draws to the eyepiece of 6.5”and 3”each, and a 3”sunshade, all with smooth sliding action. The overall total length when fully extended is 28”.The draw is marked to “B. Cooke & Son Ltd, Hull”. *B. Cooke& Son Ltd was founded by Barnard Cooke who was a clock maker and optician. He was the younger brother of the more illustrious Thomas Cooke of York, who was a renowned telescope and clockmaker. The first record of Barnard Cooke in Hull was in the 1863 directory in which he is operating as an optician from 56, Saville Street. In the1867 Directory the business was listed as B.Cooke & Son and had moved to 55, Saville Street. In the year 1892, the business had moved premises again, to 44 Saville Street and by 1882 the business was still operating from the same premises. It was described not only as an opticians, but also as chronometer and clock makers. In 1918, B.Cooke & Son was sold to Henry Hughes & Son, the London company, who installed Mr. Stacy Dickeson as the Manager. Mr. Stacy Dickeson bought the Company in 1926 and ownership of B. Cooke & Son still remains in the family. By 1933 B. Cooke & Son occupied 1, Market Place, at the end of Scale Lane, Hull. During this period, the firm was listed as a limited company and described as Nautical Instrument Makers.
